What wasn't working

A large custom tailoring operation in Trivandrum employs 200+ tailors. At that scale, manual cloth cutting creates compounding problems:

  • Inconsistency — different cutters produce different accuracy levels, even on the same pattern
  • Fabric waste — imprecise cutting leads to wastage on every cut; at 200+ tailors, this adds up significantly
  • Speed ceiling — output is capped by how fast a human can cut accurately
  • Skill dependency — quality depends on the individual cutter's experience and attention on any given day
  • No data — no visibility into cutting efficiency, waste per cutter, or rework rate

What Tensorbot built

Tensorbot deployed Vasthra — a full-stack AI-powered cloth cutting system. Vasthra is not a software add-on for a third-party cutter; Tensorbot built the hardware and software together.

Hardware — Gantry Cutting Machine

  • A Cartesian robot-based precision cutting head mounted on a gantry frame — consistent, programmable precision with no operator skill required at the cutting stage.

Computer Vision Layer

  • Pattern recognition — reads the uploaded cutting design and identifies all cut lines, notches, and grain lines
  • Fabric placement detection — locates the fabric on the cutting surface and aligns the cutting path to it
  • Real-time alignment verification — confirms alignment before and during cutting

Sensor Fusion for Measurement

  • Automated body measurement capture — removes the manual tape-measure-to-cutter translation step
  • Measurement data flows directly into cutting dimensions — one step, no transcription error

Cloud Application

  • Design upload and management — import patterns directly from standard fashion/design software
  • Job scheduling and queue management — operators see what's cutting, what's next, what's done
  • Cutting history per customer — measurements and patterns stored persistently
